Embracing Both Sides of the Coin: A Journey in Healthcare and Research
Life has a way of shaping our perspectives and career goals
in the most unexpected ways. Like a coin, which has two sides—a head and a tail—I
also have a blend of two cultures: East African and American. Each side of
this coin has taught me invaluable lessons that have influenced my journey.
The head represents American culture, a place of immense
learning and growth. The tail embodies East African culture, grounding every
decision I make today and in the future.
Reflecting on the differences in healthcare between East
Africa and the United States has been eye-opening. Witnessing firsthand the
impact of inadequate healthcare in Ethiopia compared to the comprehensive
healthcare available in the US was a turning point for me. It ignited a passion
to pursue a career in healthcare and make a tangible difference.
Yet, beyond immediate healthcare, the long-term impact of
research on patient outcomes truly inspires me. It fuels my desire to delve
deeper into medical research, knowing that pre-existing research informs every
diagnosis and treatment plan. This is particularly crucial for diseases like
sickle cell, where limited research poses significant challenges.
Diversifying the healthcare industry is paramount.
Addressing the gaps in minority and black communities is not just a goal but a
necessity. As my father wisely said, "Instead of complaining about the
darkness, try to create light." Every community has unique challenges, especially
for minority groups. By having doctors and researchers from these communities,
we can tackle these issues and bring positive change.
Remember, having confidence is vital for doing all
those things. Build confidence and trust in yourself and your
capabilities. Showcase your abilities and worth to the world, and don’t be afraid
to make mistakes. That is how you learn everything, especially if you are a
first generation like me. Always remember that you are not inferior to anyone
else—you are equal, if not greater. Stand tall, believe in your dreams, and let
your light shine brightly.
Thank you for journeying with me through these reflections.
Embrace both sides of your coin, and let’s create light together.
